The successful recapture of Eel-garas represents a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to stabilize and secure Somalia.
In a significant military operation, the Federal Government of Somalia, along with armed civilians, successfully recaptured the city of Eel-garas in the Galgaduud region from the grips of the notorious terrorist group Al-Shabaab. Eel-garas, located approximately 63 kilometers southeast of Dhusamareb, had been under the control of Al-Shabaab for an extended period, making this victory a significant milestone for the Somali government.
The recapture of Eel-garas holds immense strategic importance, given its location along a major road connecting Dhusamareb to several other towns in the region. This road serves as a critical lifeline for transportation and trade in the area, making the liberation of Eel-garas a pivotal development for both the Federal Government and the local populace.
However, this triumph did not come without sacrifices. Two Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Galmudug region lost their lives during the operation due to a tragic mine explosion. MP Mohamed Mohamud Ahmed, a member of the Galmudug Assembly of Representatives, and Abdullahi Ibrahim, a figure serving on the Dhusmareb District Council, were both killed in the explosion.
As of now, there has been no official response from Al-Shabaab regarding the loss of Eel-garas. The group, known for its silence in the face of setbacks, has yet to comment on the situation.
The successful recapture of Eel-garas represents a significant step forward in the ongoing efforts to stabilize and secure Somalia.
