Lamu, Kenya – Fourteen Kenyan soldiers sustained injuries on Monday when their military vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Baure-Drum major supply route in Lamu County. The devastating incident has once again brought to light the ongoing threat posed by al Shabaab terrorists operating within the Boni Forest.

The soldiers were on a routine patrol mission when their Kenya Army technical vehicle was struck by the concealed IED, which was planted by al Shabaab insurgents. The injured servicemen were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the attack.

In response to the incident, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) swiftly condemned the act of terror and issued a plea to local residents to collaborate with security agencies to help identify and neutralize these criminal elements.

In a statement, the KDF expressed its outrage: “KDF condemns the criminals who disrupt movement and sabotage socioeconomic stability in the area. Further, KDF calls upon residents to share information with the security agencies on these criminal elements who lurk in their communities.”

This attack closely follows another devastating incident in Baragoni, Lamu County, where two construction workers were critically injured just two days prior. These workers fell victim to a roadside bomb explosion, underscoring the persistent threat that al Shabaab poses in Kenya.

Al Shabaab, an extremist group with ties to Al Qaeda, has been active in Kenya for several years, consistently carrying out acts of violence and terrorism. One of the most notorious attacks attributed to the group was the 2013 Westgate shopping mall attack in Nairobi, which resulted in the tragic loss of 67 lives.
