In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a surprise attack by ISIS militants targeted the Puntland Defense Forces (PDF) base in Dharjaale.
The assault began with a vehicle-borne explosive device, followed by a direct assault by armed militants, which was met with resistance from the PDF.
Dharjaale, located along the road to Iskushuban district, had recently hosted a military drill by Puntland forces. Reports indicate that the explosion killed four soldiers and injured others. Puntland forces have since launched a manhunt for the attackers, with some militants reportedly captured and others killed during the confrontation.
Images from the scene reveal the bodies of two ISIS fighters, both identified as foreigners. One is believed to be of Arab origin, while the other hails from Ethiopia. Both were dressed in uniforms resembling those of Puntland Defense Forces, possibly as a disguise.

In recent weeks, several ISIS members, including young recruits, have surrendered to Puntland authorities, responding to an amnesty call. However, sources suggest that some of these defectors were stationed in Dharjaale, raising questions about their motives and the possibility of infiltration.
Analysts describe the suicide attack as a desperate move by ISIS, likely prompted by mounting pressure from Puntland forces preparing to storm their strongholds in the rugged Calmiskaad mountains. This incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by militant groups in the region and the resilience of Puntland’s security forces in countering these challenges.
