Somali President at the UN General Assembly

His Excellency Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, the President of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia and his delegates have arrived yesterday at the UN Head Quarters in New York to participate the week-long UN General Assembly meetings in New York.

The morning the President attended the opening session of the high level General Assembly session where the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and U.S. President, Barack Obama were the main speakers. The President Sharif is scheduled to take the floor on Saturday, 25th of September.
In order to strengthen the bilateral relations between Somalia and its friends, on day one of the summit, the President met number of world leaders, notably the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifah Al-Thani, the President of Uganda Yuweri Museveni, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Meles Zenawi, the foreign minister of UAE Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, among others. The dire humanitarian situation inside Somalia, the ongoing security challenges and the latest political development were main topics that the President addressed in all of his meetings.
President Sharif was also the main speaker in a Mini Summit for Somalia organized and chaired by the Secretary General of the United Nations, ban ki-Moon. This Mini Summit was attended by more than 40 countries and international organizations and it stressed that “the gains in the political and security areas needed to be supported by reconstruction activities to ensure long-term stability.”
President Sharif attended a luncheon organised by the Secretary General, Ban ki-Moon and dinner hosted by the US President Barack Obama.
