Several al-Shabab militants were killed on Monday when a vehicle laden with explosives went off in a house in Buloburte town, some 200 km north of the capital Mogadishu.
At least 8 militants who were present in the house died, residents in the town confirmed who spoke in the condition of anonymity due to their safety.
‘’ They were packing the vehicle with explosive devices when the deadly incident occurred, the blast was heard all over the town,’’ said one resident who refused to mention his name, fearing to be targeted by the terrorist group.
It was not clear if the militants died while packing the car with bombs for a suicide mission or if it went off afterwards while they were in the vicinity.
Somali Police commander of Hiiran region said that the militants wanted to carry out a suicide mission in Beledweyn, which is under the control of Somali troops and AMISOM peacekeepers.
It is not the first time vehicles being assembled for suicide missions in Somalia have exploded while still under the care of the militants.
