Somalia: AMISOM claims killing senior al-Shabaab commandersThe African Union mission in Somalia claimed killing six al-Shabaab commanders in an offensive against the extremists in Southern Somalia, the mission has said.
In a press statement on Tuesday, AMISOM said that it killed the commanders in battles against the al-Qaeda-linked militant group that took place in the Lower Shabelle region.
AMISOM identified the commanders and their positions as: Aden Bale – the Al-Shabaab commander of Leego; Sheikh Mohamed Ali who was second in command in Janaale; Mohamed Abribao who was an Al-Shabaab judge in Janaale; Hassan Ali Dole – the Chief Aminiyat of lower Shabelle region, a Yemeni IED expert “Abu Islam” and Kenyan Sheikh Mansur who was the chief trainer.
Somali and AU troops recaptured the town of Janale on Monday from al-Shabaab. Janale is some 80 km (50 miles) southwest of Mogadishu and it was under the control of al-Shabaab since September last year.
Last week, a U.S. drone airstrike in Southwestern Somalia killed a senior al-Shabaab commander named Hassan Ali Dhoore, who was a top member of the group’s security and intelligence section.
