Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint in Northern Somalia on Sunday night and a local official’s residence, killing two people, Horseed Media reports.
The attack took place in the port town of Bossaso, the commercial hub of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland.
In the ensuing firefight, one policeman was killed and at least two people were injured.
The mayor of Armo district which is some 90-KM from Bossaso, Mohamed Ali Shire was injured in a similar attack launched at his home. One of his bodyguards was killed in the attack by the gunmen who are thought to be from the militant group al-Shabaab.
Pro-Al Shabaab websites claimed the attack was carried out by militants from the extremist group which has been fighting with the Puntland forces in Galgala mountain ranges.
In recent years, Puntland authorities have launched a massive crackdown on the network and its military has sentenced members and other individuals linked to the terror group tough punishments such as death penalty.
Last month, the governor of Bari province survived an assassination following an assault launched at his house in Bossaso.
