Al Shabaab insurgents shot dead a member of the Federal Parliament in the capital Mogadishu on Saturday, as the group continues its terror campaign in the city.
MP Mohamed Ahmed Gurhan, was shot by al-Shabaab gunmen as he was heading to work. Gurhan who sustained a life-threatening injury was rushed to a hospital and died after few hours from the injuries he sustained from the bullets.
‘’ He was driving to the Parliament house when they fired at his car and the managed to escape immediately,’’ said one of the witnesses.
Al Shabaab claimed the responsibility few moments after the attack.
Parliament Speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari condemned the attack and vowed that security agencies will detain the assailants behind the murder.
Since 2012 when the new parliament was formed, at least ten legislators have been gunned down in Mogadishu. Most of the assassinations have been claimed by al-Shabaab yet others were politically motivated.
Government assassinations are nothing new as al-Shabaab tactic, but now the extremists are taking aim at officials who are much more low-level, who often do not have the sort of bodyguards or other protection that top leaders do. Some of the victims have only the slimmest connections to the authorities.
