Dhusamareb, Galmudug – On Saturday, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud arrived in Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug state, to initiate the second phase of the ongoing war against the extremist group, al-Shabaab.
The distinguished visit of President Hassan Sheikh was met with a warm welcome from Galmudug leader, Ahmed Ali Kariye Qor-qor, along with ministers and Members of Parliament from the region.
An estimated 8,000 troops have been strategically deployed to Galmudug to bolster the efforts in combatting terrorism, constituting the pivotal second phase of the anti-terror campaign.
The current phase concentrates its operations within the regions of Galmudug and Hirshabelle. President Hassan Sheikh has outlined a comprehensive three-phase approach in the war against terrorism, consisting of an economic component aimed at curbing the terrorists’ financial resources, an ideological aspect to counter their extremist beliefs, and ultimately, a direct military confrontation.
In the initial stage of the campaign, al-Shabaab was dislodged from major urban centers, but the group still maintains a presence in rural areas and villages. Additionally, they have managed to acquire a substantial cache of government-owned weaponry, a matter acknowledged by the President Hassan Sheikh’s security adviser.
The ongoing second phase of the al-Shabaab war represents a critical juncture in Somalia’s battle against terrorism. The successful execution of this phase will play a determining role in the government’s ability to conclusively defeat al-Shabaab and pave the way for lasting peace and stability in Somalia.
