The U.S. military conducted an airstrike on Tuesday in Somalia that killed five al-Shabaab terrorists, according to a press release from U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
The airstrike was carried out in a remote area near Cali Heele, approximately 244 kilometers northeast of Mogadishu. It was conducted in support of Somali National Army (SNA) forces who were engaged by the terrorist organization.
AFRICOM’s initial assessment is that no civilians were injured or killed in the airstrike.
“U.S. Africa Command takes great measures to prevent civilian casualties,” the press release said. “Protecting civilians remains a vital part of the command’s operations to promote a more secure and stable Africa.” but the US military has admitted to causing civilian casualties as a result of an air strike in Somalia 2018 – 2019.
The US has been conducting air attack in Somalia for years to help defeat al-Shabab, which seeks to topple Somalia’s western-backed central government and set up its own rule based on strict interpretation of the Islamic sharia law.
