The Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) Peter de Clercq has met today Puntland’s President Abdiweli Mohammed Ali, in the state’s capital of Garowe.
According to the Puntland President’s press service, the two sides discussed on the current situation of Somalia, UN’s assistance programs in the region, and the democratization process which Puntland is gearing up for.
Addressing Journalists following the talks, President Gaas said that they had discussed the primary areas of cooperation between Puntland and United Nations, especially the mechanisms of humanitarian and ensuring peace in the region.
On his side, Mr Peter de Clercq stressed that the United Nations is determined to continue its support towards the development of the whole country and stability.
The UN deputy Envoy arrived yesterday in the semi-autonomous region for the first time since he was appointed and paid a visit to a refugee camp in Bossaso, which is hosting thousands of Somali returnees who had escaped the violence in Yemen.
