The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President U. Joy Ogwu ( Nigeria):
The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that occurred in Mogadishu, Somalia, on 4 October 2011, which resulted in the death and injury of many innocent civilians. They expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the victims of this heinous crime and to their families, and to the people of Somalia and the Transitional Federal Government.
The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support to the Transitional Federal Government in its efforts to achieve peace, security and reconciliation through the Djibouti Peace Process, and the work of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). The members of the Security Council expressed their continued appreciation for the commitment of troops by the Governments of Burundi and Uganda. They reiterated their condemnation of all acts of violence and incitement to violence against civilians, AMISOM and the Transitional Federal Government.
The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of its motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.
The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the need to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.
The members of the Security Council reminded States that they must ensure that measures taken to combat terrorism comply with all their obligations under international law, in particular international human rights, refugee and humanitarian law.
