Parliament speakerSpeaker of the Somali Federal Parliament has said that they will continue with their duties despite Saturday’s deadly attack launched by al-Shabab.

At least 10 people were killed when armed militants wearing explosives vests attacked the Parliament building which is heavily guarded by the African Union troops. The attacked occurred during a parliamentary session.

Mr Mohamed Jawari Osman told the media that the government’s efforts will not be dented by the increasing attacks of the militants and called for the members of the Parliament to double their efforts.

“The Parliament will continue with its work as usual….. We cannot allow ourselves to be intimidated by terrorism,” Jawari said.

The attack on the Parliament building was almost similar to the recent attacks carried by the extremist groups on the Presidential Palace and Mogadishu court.

Somalia’s national security minister Abdikarim Guled announced his resignation on Saturday evening, shortly after the attack was carried out. He was criticised for not doing enough to curb a surge of attacks carried by the hardliners.

Insurgents often target lawmakers and some politicians complain that inadequate security leaves them vulnerable to attack.
