Somalia: Puntland cabinet holds emergency meeting after deadly attack
Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland’s cabinet hold an emergency security meeting on Tuesday following the suicide attack on a bus ferrying UNICEF staff members in the region’s capital, Garowe.
The meeting was chaired by the acting president Abdihakim Abdullahi Amey in the absence of President Abdiweli Gaas who is in neighbouring Ethiopia on an official visit.
In a statement released after the meeting, the cabinet stressed that the security is under control and urged the people to ‘’unite and work and report to the security agencies’’ in case of any threats.
The cabinet also took the decision to maximise security measures near vital and strategic utilities.
At least six members working with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) were killed after a man blew up himself while the van was fetching the staff members from a residential place to the main office.
Al-Qaeda-linked militant group claimed the responsibility of the attack, claiming that the United Nations organization is one of their ‘’enemies’’.
A fact-finding committee composed of ministers and security officials was appointed to investigate on the attack by the acting President.
