Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the US Department of State Tina Kaidanow visited Somali capital, Mogadishu on Thursday and met with the leaders of the Somalia Federal government.
The meeting was held in Mogadishu airport and was attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid and several ministers.
According to a statement from the office of the President, the talks of both sides reviewed the state of Somalia’s efforts in the fight against terrorism, in addition to exchanging views on a number of issues of mutual concern.
Somalia President said that he was delighted with the support of the American government towards Somalia and pleaded for more assistance as the country continues to recover the over two decades of civil war. He stated that his government really needed to be supported in areas such as rebuilding of the economic sector and implementation of centres
Both sides raised concerns on the impacts of the on-going conflict in Yemen, which could hamper the peace and stability in the region.
US government has for long supported the government of Somalia and the African Union forces in the fight against terror groups like al-Shabaab.
Last month, US Secretary of State John Kerry paid a landmark visit to Mogadishu, met Somali leaders and declared afterwards his government’s continued support to the process of stability and development of Somalia.
