Somalia’s Al-Qaeda-linked militant group hanged to death a former district governor in Southern Somalia and a former soldier, reports said on Thursday.
The execution took place in Bariirey district in the lower Shebelle region, which is some 50KM south of the capital Mogadishu. It’s one of the few strongholds still under the control of al-Shabaab.
Residents of the district were called to attend the execution, after vehicles with loudspeakers went around announcing.
Osman Moalim Ahmed, described by al-Shabaab officials as the governor of Bariirey district before it fell to the control of the militants in September, was killed by a firing squad.
The extremists shot to death another man they also described as one of the government troops at the scene.
Over the years the terror group has conducted a series of public executions and amputations in the areas under its control.
