At least 25 Al-Shabaab militants were killed in heavy fighting between the Islamist group and Somalia National Army (SNA) backed by Africa Union peacekeeping forces known as AMISOM on Wednesday night in the outskirt Elbuur town of central Somalia, a local official said Thursday.
District Commissioner of Elbur, Abdi Hassan told journalists that the joint forces gained military victory over the battle which took place in the military bases in Budbud and Ulajarad regions which lie 75 km outside Elbuur.
“The joint forces killed 25 members of the militant group during the battle. We also fully control the areas where the fighting occurred and the troops are advancing to new locations in the region in order to liberate more areas from remnants in the region atmoment,” Hassan said.
Al-Shabaab militants did not comment on the military victory by the Somali government. Hassan did not also give the number of casualties on the government or AMISOM side.
But such military gains come amid increased military operations against Al-Shabaab militants in the region.
