Two Government Soldiers have been shot dead by unknown gunmen in the Somali capital, Mogadishu on Tuesday, as the country celebrates the 54th anniversary since it gained independence.

Festivals were held across the country to mark the day when Northern and Southern territories united and gained Independence from the colonialists in 1960.

The Somali government leaders attended a ceremony held in the capital, honouring the heroes who struggled for the independence.

The unidentified gunmen managed to escape from the scene after assassinating the soldiers. No group has yet claimed the responsibility for the incident.

In the past three days, at least six soldiers have been shot dead by unknown gunmen.

But government officials have several times blamed al-Shabab for carrying out such attacks.

Al-Shabaab has vowed to launch attacks during the holy month of Ramadan in Mogadishu.

Security in the capital has been beefed up and more security forces have been poured in the main roads.
