AU welcomes launch of United Nations Support Office in Somalia

The Officer in Charge of AMISOM, representing the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia,  Major General Fidza Dludlu welcomes the establishment of the United Nations Support Office for Somalia (UNSOS), following the adoption today of the UN Security Council Resolution 2245.
The OIC AMISOM acknowledges that UNSOS, which has replaced the United Nations Support Office for AMISOM (UNSOA), will strengthen support to AMISOM and the Somali Security Forces in the fight against Al Shabaab.
“The Mission looks forward to an enhanced utilization of resources coupled with added abilities, which will further help AMISOM achieve its objectives, in line with the Mandate, by degrading the enemy further and ensuring that peace and security is ultimately restored in Somalia ,” said the OIC.
UNSOS currently supports 22,126 AMISOM personnel. UNSOS will also support an initial 10,900 of Somali National Army personnel participating in joint operations with AMISOM.
