At least 45 suspected al-Shabaab militants have been killed in drone strikes in Southern Somalia on Saturday, a government official said.
According to the governor of Lower Shabelle region where the strikes were carried out, foreign militants were among the 30 who were killed when unknown drones carried out airstrikes.
He added that at least three missiles were targeted in areas the militants were gathered including a convoy.
‘’ I can confirm that between 45-60 al-Shabaab militants were killed during the airstrikes…. Some of their officials were killed also in the attack including foreigners,’’ said the governor Abdulkadir Siidi.
The area is off-limits to journalists, making it impossible to independently verify the exact numbers and identity the dead.
Al-Shabaab which is loyal to al-Qaeda has not issued a statement concerning the latest strikes.
In September last year, U.S drones killed former al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane in the same region that the airstrikes were carried out today.
