Somali government soldiers clashed with al-Shabaab militants in the country’s southwest Tuesday, leaving at least 8 soldiers dead, Horseed Media reports.
The deadly battle erupted at around 5:00 am after the al-Qaeda-linked extremists launched an attack on an army base in the town of Daynunay, which is some 18KM east of Baidoa city, capital of the South Central regional administration.

Reports say that there were no civilian casualties as a result of the intense fighting.
The area is off-limits to journalists, making it impossible to independently verify the exact numbers and identity the dead.
Somali army has regularly fought extremists near the scene of today’s battle.
Al-Qaeda-linked extremist group al-Shabab is battling the UN-backed government in Somalia. The group has been pushed out of most of the main towns it once controlled, but it remains a potent threat.
It has been targeting key government and security figures in the country, trying to overthrow the government in the capital, Mogadishu.
