A former al-Shabaab Press officer was executed Monday by a firing squad after a military tribunal sentenced him to death for killing several journalists in the country, Horseed Media reports.
Hassan Hanafi Haji, a Press officer of the al-Qaeda-linked militant group was found guilty for being involved in the assassination of at least five journalists who were killed in Mogadishu in the past nine years by al-Shabaab.
The execution took place in a Police base located in Mogadishu, where he was blindfolded and tied to a pole.
Mr Hanafi publicly admitted the murdering of several journalists in a recent program broadcasted by the state-run Somali National TV.
Hassan Hanafi, a former local radio reporter joined al-Shabaab militants in 2006, sources say.
In 2014, Kenyan intelligence agents arrested Hassan Hanafi Nairobi’s Eastleigh estate. In his interview, he said that he planned to travel to unnamed a European country.
Somalia is considered to be one of the most dangerous places for journalists. Most of the assassinations of the Journalists have been claimed by al-Shabaab.
