Somalia: Jubaland forces ‘kill 7 al-Shabaab fighters’ in surprise attackSomalia’s regional administration of Jubaland forces ambushed and killed a number of al-Shabaab insurgents in the outskirts of port town Kismayo, Southern part of the country, an army spokesman said.
Seven al-Shabaab fighters were killed on Monday night in the remote village of Abdalla Biroley, which is some 40 kilometres West of Kismayo, according to the Ahmed Mohamoud, a spokesman of the Jubaland forces.
‘’Our security forces launched a surprise attack on them [al-Shabaab militants] and killed seven of them. We seized a number of weapons and also took over the control of the village,’’ he said in an interview with the VOA Somali Service.
The Spokesman added that the operations against al-Shabaab militants in the region will be intensified.
Last month, Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe announced that they will launch a significant military offensive against al-Shabaab militants
Al-Qaeda-linked extremist group al-Shabab is battling the UN-backed government in Somalia, and has carried out a string of attacks in neighbouring Kenya. The group, has been pushed out of most of the main towns it once controlled, but it remains a potent threat.
It has been targeting key government and security figures in the country, trying to overthrow the government in the capital, Mogadishu.
