Growing numbers of Somali people are nowadays becoming smokers. Unknown to them is the danger that this cigarette is bringing into their life. After getting concerned I resolute into finding out the benefit of this cigar, but to my surprise there is more danger than good.
First of all Cigarette contain something called tobacco. This is a product made of tobacco leaf as a raw material. It contains the highly addictive psychoactive ingredient called nicotine, thus making many people depend on it and cause financial constrain and family disputes. According to world health organization tobacco kills up to half of its users. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to a second-hand smoke.
There are approximately 600 ingredients in cigarettes when burned this creates more than 7000 chemicals. At least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many are poisonous. Smoking also damages major organs in the body for instance lung cancer, emphysema and bronchitis are three of the most common disease directly associated with smoking. Eighty percent of lung cancer cases are due to smoking cigarette.
Aside with the dangers, is smoking cigarette allowed in Islam? Well let’s find out, although there is no direct verse from the Quran or Hadith that prohibit cigarette smoking. There are many instances where the Quran give us general guide lines and call upon us to use our reasons and intelligence in the Quran. In more recent times, as dangers of tobacco use has come to be proven beyond reasonable doubt. Scholars have now pronounced tobaccos use clearly haram (forbidden). Here is an example “In view of the harm caused by tobacco, growing trading in smoking of tobacco is judged to be haram (forbidden). The prophet peace be upon him reported to have said “do not harm yourselves or others,” further more tobacco is unwholesome, and God says in the Quran that prophet peace be upon him enjoins upon them that which is good and pure and forbids them that which is unwholesome.” (Permanent committee of academic research and Fatwa, Saudi Arabia). So that makes Cigarette smoking haram (forbidden).
So next time when you are rushing to purchase cigarette, think again and stop smoking cigarette now!
