The Somali militant group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for a brutal, religiously-motivated attack on a bus in North-eastern Kenya province on the early morning hours of Saturday.
Gunmen ambushed a bus carrying dozens of people in North-eastern Kenya, killing at least 28 passengers and wounding several others.
In a Press release from the group, it said that the attack was a response to Kenya’s “brutal oppression of Muslims in Kenya and Somalia,” including the recent Kenyan police raids in Mombasa mosques.
They also warned the Kenyan government that the attackers were sending a message to Kenya that they cannot stop the group’s operations in the country.
Police officials have told the media that the gunmen separated the Muslims and non-Muslims, and later on went to kill all the ‘’non-Muslims’’.
The al-Qaida-linked Islamist group has been behind a number of attacks in Kenya, which has troops fighting al-Shabab in Somalia.
