Somalia: Inmates escape from Hargeysa Prison killing a prison guard

On Sunday, one guard was killed during a prison escape at the maximum security prison in Hargeysa, the capital of Somaliland.

Four inmates successfully escaped from the prison using smuggled gun and ammunition killing one guard and injuring two other guards before escaping the main prison building.

An intense firefight ensued in a mosque near the prison where the four prison escapees were hold up for hours. The four men later handed themselves to the police, according to Hussein Ahmed the Justice minister of Somaliland.

Hargeysa prison is run by Somaliland custodial corps and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Most inmates of the prison are terror suspects and pirates.
