Somalia: Military officer gunned down in MogadishuGunmen shot dead a Somali military officer in the capital Mogadishu on Saturday, a district commissioner said, in the latest in a series of shootings targeting security forces and government employees.
“Two armed men opened fire at the officer, Anshur Araye Subeyr, and he died on the spot,’’ said the commissioner of Dharkenley district Omar Maow, where the incident took place.
Immediately, the gunmen fled away from the area before police arrived to carry out investigations, he added.
Attacks against members of the security forces have increased in recent months in Mogadishu, but mainly take place in the districts of Dharkenley and Wadajir or Medina, where assailants are active.
Some of the assassinations are claimed by the extremist group al-Shabaab which has been able to hit high-profile targets in Mogadishu’s heavily fortified areas, including the national courts, the UN compound, the Turkish embassy, and popular gathering places since it was pushed out in 2011.
