China handles cash aid to Somalia to tackle Food crisisChina embassy in Somalia on Sunday handed $20,000 cash aid to the Somali government, to tackle the drought and food crisis in the war-ravaged nation.

Chinese Ambassador to Somalia Wei-Hongtian, on a hand-over ceremony held in Mogadishu, said the Chinese government has paid great attention to the most severe drought and famine in the Horn of Africa including Somalia.

Permanent secretary of Somalia Prime Minister Abdulkadir Abdi Farah received the aid on behalf of the Somali government, saying China demonstrates absolute sense of brotherhood.

China re-established diplomatic relations with the Somali government and re-opened its embassy in Mogadishu last month after 24 years it was closed.

Aid agencies have warned of a new drought in Somalia, three years after a deadly famine in the country that caused the death of more 250,000 persons.
