Puntland President meets Australian Ambassador to Somalia and Head of UNODC

Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali met on Wednesday a delegation led by the new Australian Ambassador to Somalia including the head of UN Office on Drugs and Crimes Alan Cole to discuss key issues related to political, security and development cooperation.
The meeting took place in the Puntland’s state house of Garowe and was attended also by officials from the embassies of Netherlands, Britain, Denmark and Sweden.
In a Press Conference after the meeting, Puntland leader said the Australian Ambassador-led delegation had visited the region to monitor the on-going development projects, predominantly the newly built jail for imprisoning pirates in Garowe.

He added that his administration is determined to enhance the relations between both sides.
Australian Ambassador John Feakes told journalists that his country will continue to implement developmental projects in Puntland and build on the relations between both sides.
The Garowe Prison which was built by the UNODC, was officially opened in April last year whereby pirates captured on the high seas and prosecuted in other countries will be imprisoned and other criminals such as terrorists.
It symbolized a key action in helping to significantly boost anti-piracy efforts on a regional level and addresses concerns from neighboring countries over housing convicted pirates in their prisons.
