The Somali National Army (SNA) and US forces have carried out a joint operation that killed at least 100 al-Shabaab militants in the Galgudud and Middle Shabelle regions of Somalia.
The operation, which took place on Tueasday, targeted a group of al-Shabaab fighters who were gathered in the areas of Gal-Libah and El Quraq. The militants were killed in an airstrike, which was followed by ground operations by the SNA.
The Somali government has thanked the United States for its support in the operation, which it says was a “major blow” to al-Shabaab.
The operations against al-Shabaab are part of a broader effort by the Somali government and its international partners to defeat the terrorist group.
Al-Shabaab has been waging an insurgency in Somalia for more than a decade, and it is responsible for numerous attacks against civilians and government forces.
