Dr Absisalam Abdirahman Mohamed

The Federal Government of Somalia’s Council of Ministers has appointed Dr. Abdisalam Abdirahman Mohamed as the new Director General of the  National Bureau of Statistics, marking a significant leadership transition for the organization.

Dr. Mohamed, who holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Glasgow, will lead the agency for a five-year term. His appointment comes as the agency continues to develop following its re-establishment as an independent body in 2020.

The new director brings extensive government experience to the role, including previous membership in the National Economic Committee. His academic and professional background positions him as a strategic leader for the agency’s continued growth and modernization.

The  National Bureau of Statistics was originally separated from the Ministry of Planning in 2020, with Sharmarke Farah serving as its first director. Farah’s five-year tenure is credited with laying a strong foundation for the agency’s independence and development.

Dr. Mohamed’s appointment signals the government’s commitment to strengthening Somalia’s statistical capabilities and data-driven governance. His background in economics and government affairs is expected to bring fresh perspectives to the agency’s operations.

With a PhD from the University of Glasgow and experience in key government ministries, including the Ministry of Planning, Investment and Economic Development (MoPIED) and the Ministry of Finance (MoF), Dr. Mohamed is well-positioned to lead the National Statistics Agency into its next phase of development.

The appointment comes at a critical time for Somalia’s data collection and economic planning efforts, with expectations high for Dr. Mohamed to build upon the agency’s previous achievements and drive further improvements in national statistical reporting and analysis.
