The Government of Japan pledged Friday $38 million in humanitarian and development aid for Somalia under a bilateral agreement signed in the capital, Mogadishu.
The agreement was signed by Somalia’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Abdirahman Aynte and Japan’s ambassador to Somalia Tatsushi Terada.
According to Japanese ambassador, the direct aid will play a crucial role in the development of Somalia’s education, water and health in this year.
The Japanese ambassador also revealed that his government provided $48 million to Somalia as part of an assistance program last year.
Somalia’s Minister of Planning Abdirahman Aynte praised Japan’s commitment to Somalia’s process of rebuilding and development.
Since 2007, Japan has contributed about $300 million to the Federal Government of Somalia, out of which $60 million is directed to security.
