At least 13 Somali immigrants died in a fatal road accident in the outskirts of the Sudan capital Khartoum, witnesses and officials confirmed.
The illegal immigrants were en route to Libya, where they were planning to cross the Mediterranean sea and reach their destination – Europe.
Libya is a major exit point for the journey, with human traffickers exploiting the political chaos in Libya since the toppling of Moammar Gadhafi.
Every year, many African asylum-seekers cross the Mediterranean Sea to enter Europe in a search for a better life than the one in their own countries.
The accident happened after the truck they were travelling in collided with another car, said a local source.
One other female immigrant has been seriously injured and admitted to hospital.
The chaos in Somalia which has been going on for over two decades has caused many young men and women to risk their lives by going through dangerous journeys, in order to seek for a better life.
