Somalia Commits to Accelerating SDG Attainment

New York, – Prime Minister H.E. Hamza Abdi Barre has affirmed Somalia’s commitment to accelerating actions towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during his address at the SDG Summit 2023 held in New York.

The Prime Ministe stated that Somalia is dedicated to increasing investments in the education sector to reduce illiteracy rates, expand access to quality education, and promote technical and vocational training opportunities for Somali youth. “Education is the bedrock of development. We want to ensure all our citizens, especially girls and women, have access to quality learning opportunities to gain the knowledge and skills to drive Somalia forward,” PM Barre remarked.

Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted that Somalia is prioritizing sustainable agriculture practices, improved water resource management, boosting food security and building resilience to climate change impacts. “As a country vulnerable to climate shocks, Somalia is taking urgent steps to adapt our agriculture and food systems to build climate resilience so we can ensure long-term food and nutrition security for all Somalis,” the PM explained.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 SDGs provide a shared blueprint for countries to work towards a more sustainable future. At the SDG Summit, world leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the 2030 Agenda and accelerated actions to achieve the Global Goals.

With Somalia still facing developmental challenges, PM Barre stressed that the country is determined to take tangible national and global actions to realize the SDGs and improve the lives of all Somalis. The premier stated Somalia welcomes partnerships to accelerate SDG progress and achieve lasting peace and sustainable development.
