The meeting focused on the current security situation and the transition plan following the conclusion of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Mogadishu, Somalia – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, chaired a high-level meeting of the National Security Council at the National Security Office to deliberate on critical strategies for Somalia’s future security and governance.

The meeting focused on the current security situation and the transition plan following the conclusion of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Key attendees included Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre, Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama, cabinet members of the National Security Council, and senior military commanders.

A core topic of discussion was the strategy to strengthen national security and complete the reform of Somali forces, ensuring they are prepared to manage security post-ATMIS and align with the African Union Support Operations in Somalia (AUSSOM).

The council also addressed the economic and agricultural challenges facing the country. The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation presented a report on obstacles undermining farmers’ productivity, particularly illegal fees and checkpoints in Middle and Lower Shabelle regions. President Mohamud urged urgent action to support farmers and boost agricultural production for the benefit of Somalia’s economy.

This meeting comes amid heightened security concerns, following reports of over 1000 troops crossing into Kenya after a recent battle in Raskaanboni.
