Turkish President Recep Tayyib Erdogan who has been visiting countries in the East African region arrived in Mogadishu on Sunday morning.
President Erdogan was received at the Mogadishu airport by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Osman along with other functionaries of the Somali government and diplomats. The President was also given a guard of honour.
During his one day visit to the capital, he will hold extensive talks with the top government leaders and will visit the Turkish funded projects sites.
He will also officially open the newly built Mogadishu airport terminal which is international standard.
” It is a historic visit and a symbol of how the Turkish government’s continued support to the people of Somalia,” Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid said.
The visit is expected to strengthen relations between the two countries and explore new avenues for cooperation.
Mogadishu has turned into a virtual fortress for the high-profile visit, with heightened security measures in the main roads.
It is the second time Mr Erdogan has visited Somalia in four years. In 2011, he became the first major Western leader in decades to visit the country wracked by war and starvation.
