A suspected suicide bomber who killed more than 15 people in a Mogadishu popular hotel over the weekend was a German of Somali origin, Intelligence officials have said.
The Al Jazeera hotel attack happened when the suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden truck at the gate of the hotel, which is close to the main airport.
Somalia’s security agencies with the assistance from foreign experts launched an investigation into the Aljazeera hotel blast.
‘’ Investigations are still going on and we can now only confirm to you that he is a German citizen who just came back recently,’’ said an Intelligence official, who spoke to Horseed Media on the condition of anonymity.
He went to add that he had lived in German state of North Rhine-Westphalia city of Bonn.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaida-linked Islamic extremist group that has carried out many attacks in Somalia, claimed responsibility for the assault on the hotel, which is popular with Somali government officials and foreigners, including ambassadors and UN senior officials.
The group which lost its last major strongholds last week has vowed to increase attacks.
