Eriteria foreign affairs minister Ismail Salah visited Somaliland on Monday.
The minister met Somaliland president Muuse Bihi Abdi later after his arrival. The two discussed on how to enhance peaceful correlation among the two nations.
Somaliland foreign affairs minister Yassin Mahamud Faratoon stated that the meeting will strengthen relationships between the two countries.
“This is a mission to unite the entire region and especially build relationships among our two countries,” Faratoon said.
In the other hand, Eritrea’s Ismail Salah added that his country is going to reinstate the political role in the region.
“We have been sent by the president of Eritrea to come and visit Somaliland. We are here to sit talks with you and build
relationship ,” Salah said.
Eritrea was out of active politics of the region since 2009.
Eritrea has been subjected to a U.N. arms embargo since 2009 over allegations that it provided support to militants in Somalia and for failing to pull troops out of disputed territory with Djibouti. Asmara denied accusations it backed Somali insurgents.
Eritrea foreign affairs minister’s visit to Somaliland counters Djibouti president Ismail Omar Guelleh’s reception in Somalia last week.
Somaliland has straggled to attain recognition from the international community as an independent nation.
Somaliland declared independence after the overthrow of Somali military dictator Siad Barre in 1991. It has a working political system, government institutions, a police force and its own currency.
