At least 10 Somali civilians including women and children have been killed and dozens injured in an airstrike carried out by the Kenyan warplanes in Southern Somalia, residents have said.
The airborne attacks took place in Gedo region, close to the Somalia-Kenya border.
One local elder told local media outlets that the air strikes killed more than ten people who were living in rural areas.
In one of the strikes, five children who were heading to madrassa, an Islamic religious school were killed.
‘’They pounded the whole area indiscriminately and never bothered about the innocent people,’’ said Idris Nur.
The Kenyan government, which usually carries out airstrikes in retaliation to al-Shabaab attacks in its country has not issued a statement concerning the latest strikes.
Kenya sent forces into Somalia in 2011 to fight the al-Qaida-inspired Islamist group, which has carried out a series of bombings and kidnappings in the region.
Nairobi officials have said they will keep their troops in Somalia for as long as necessary to win the war. Kenyan troops are fighting alongside African Union forces.
