Somalia: Child Polio Vaccine Campaign kicks off in Puntland

Puntland Vice President Abdihakim Abdullahi Omar on Saturday officially opened a week-long Campaign in which Children under the age of five will be vaccinated from Polio and Measles.

The Campaign which is held once in a year has been launched by the Puntland Ministry of Health backed by the UN’s World Health Organization (WHO) and other International Partners.

Thousands of Health workers and other Volunteers are expected to make house calls all over Puntland Provinces during the Campaign.

Speaking at the launching Ceremony, Puntland Health Minister Dr Sadik Enow said that they are hoping to reach an estimated 229,000 Children across Puntland and will be vaccinated from diseases such as Polio and measles.

‘’ Our main target is to reach every Child in Puntland during the campaign, Therefore we are kindly requesting parents to Co-operate with the Health workers and ensure that their Children are immunized,’’ said Dr Sadik Enow.

Officials from UNICEF displayed a report indicating that 60% of Somali Children haven’t been immunized and also in every 10, two die of diseases that can be prevented.

The Immunization Campaign comes days after measles cases were reported from Bari, Nugal and Mudug states of Puntland.
