Peter de Clercq, a Dutch national has been appointed as deputy special envoy in Somalia by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon.
Philippe Lazzarini of Switzerland will be replaced by Mr de Clercq as Mr. Ban ki-moon’s deputy special representative for Somalia and also UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative.
According to reports, Mr. Lazzarini has been appointed to hold a role office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL).
The Secretary-General thanked Lazzarini for his dedication and service in Somalia.
Mr. de Clercq has a long-standing international career; he previously served as the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator and interim in Sudan and worked with the UN High Commission for Refugees for 27 years.
In May, the UN Security Council extended the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) for another three months to provide support to the country’s recovery process.
