Somalia: Puntland authorities arrest two JournalistsAuthorities in Somalia’s autonomous state of Puntland arrested two journalists working for a local radio station on Saturday, Horseed Media reports.
Abdirahman Hussein Gardi, the director of Daljir radio and Jamal Farah Aden who is also the editor of the news outlet were detained by police forces from the headquarters of the local radio station and were taken to police custody, reporters said.
Reasons behind their arrests is still yet unclear, but some reporters have said that the local radio station had broadcasted a debate programme on the growing insecurity and emerging economy crisis in the region .
The arrests drew wide condemnation from the media associations, calling for the authorities to release the journalists.
“The arrest is not acceptable and the police clearly infringed the rights of the two journalists to inform the public,” said Feisal Khalif, the Secretary General of Puntland journalists Union (MAP).
Somalia is regarded as one of the riskiest countries in the world to be a journalist.
