Somalia: Somali mother gives birth on German navy vessel

A baby girl has been born on a German navy vessel after her mother became one of nearly 6000 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean in the past few days.
According to navy officials, a 33-year-old Somali mother who was one of the rescued migrants gave birth on Monday as the ship was heading to an Italian port.
The girl, who was named Sofia and her mother are said to be in good health on the Schleswig-Holstein ship, which was hosting 453 migrants saved by the British navy and then transferred to the German warship.
Reports say that she embarked her journey from the Somali capital Mogadishu when she was five months pregnant.
A humanitarian crisis is developing in Europe as refugees traveling via Libya and other countries seek to enter the European Union via the Mediterranean Sea, resulting in a tragic loss of life for those on overcrowded boats.
