A member of the Somali Federal Parliament has been shot dead by unknown gunmen on Thursday morning in Mogadishu, officials have confirmed.
Another member of the Parliament has been injured in the incident and has been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
The late Mohamed Mohamud Hayd was killed by gunmen who shot him from a car while he was driving too in Hamar Weyne neighbourhood, District Commissioner confirmed.
At least five members of the Parliament have been shot since the beginning of the year.
No group has yet claimed the responsibility of the latest assassination.
Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh has condemned the assassination of the MP and vowed that his government won’t tolerate on such ”acts”.
“This criminal act only promotes violence, distress and grief in our community. Taking a human life is abhorrent and only affects an innocent family and strikes them with grief. This criminal act will be investigated and justice will be brought forth,” he said in a statement from his office.
Insecurity is increasing in the capital since the holy month of Ramadan began. At least five Somali government soldiers were killed within three days in the capital.
Extremist group al-Shabab vowed to increase attacks during Ramadan period but it hasn’t yet clearly claimed the responsibility for the on-going violence in the capital.
