Members of the Somali Federal Parliament have reacted to the Saturday’s terrorist attack to the Parliament building in the country’s capital claimed by al-Qaeda-linked militant group al-Shabab.
A member of the Parliament has insisted that the attack was an expected one and had already informed the Parliament speaker of such threats.
‘’ Today’s attack was something we expected to happen… we submitted a report to the Parliament Speaker and informed about the upcoming threat but no steps were taken’’, said MP Abdinasir Garane.
The attack happened during a parliamentary session, more than one hundred MPs were present in the parliament building which is one of the heavily guarded buildings in Mogadishu. At least 10 people were killed in the attack.
For the last couple of days there have been many rumors about a motion against the President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who is in South Africa attending the inauguration of President Jacob Zuma.
More than 100 MPs were planning to draft a motion of NO confidence against the President. Many MPs blame the President of the insecurity in the country and the corruption allegations against the Federal government.
“My reaction to this incident is that there is non-existent security for members of parliament who become soft targets,” said another MP.
A car bomb exploded at the entrance of the Parliament, later several armed militants stormed the building, and a heavy gunfight ensued between the gunmen and the African Union Peacekeepers (AMISOM).
In October 2013 the militant group launched a devastating attack on the Mogadishu’s court, killing more than 15 people. In February this year, Al Shabab fighters attacked the Presidential palace killing almost 20 people; seven Al shabab fighters were killed in that attack.
