Mogadishu, Tuesday – A powerful explosion shook the Hamarweyne district of Mogadishu today, particularly in the vicinity of the Benadir Regional Administration. The incident occurred when an individual, reportedly wearing a bomb jacket, detonated explosives near a restaurant, just a short distance from the Benadir Regional Administration.
According to local authorities, the assailant blew himself up while being pursued by security forces. The resulting blast claimed the lives of three people and left two others injured. Prompt response from security forces saw them swiftly arriving at the scene to launch an investigation into the incident.
The militant group Al-Shabaab quickly claimed responsibility for the attack in a news release. They asserted that their target was individuals working for the government, further noting that the explosion was carried out by a member of their group who intentionally took his own life.
Mogadishu has witnessed a relative improvement in safety recently, with a notable decline in the frequency of truck bombings that plagued the city in the past. However, today’s tragic event serves as a stark reminder that security challenges persist.
