Puntland Police Seek to Modernize Force by Recruiting University Graduates

In a strategic move to professionalize law enforcement and address youth unemployment, the Puntland Police Force has launched an ambitious recruitment drive targeting university graduates.

The initiative aims to bring modern technological skills and fresh perspectives into the regional police service.

Lt. Gen. Abdirisaq Ismail Hassan, Deputy Commander of the Puntland Police Public Relations Directorate, explained that the new strategy is designed to transform the police force by incorporating highly educated young professionals. “We’re looking to recruit individuals who can help us keep pace with technological advancements in law enforcement,” Hassan told VOA.

The recruitment effort has already generated significant interest, with approximately 800 university graduates applying for positions. Of these applicants, the police command plans to hire 500 new officers, representing a substantial injection of young talent into the regional police force.

This initiative comes at a critical time for Puntland’s youth, who have been struggling with high unemployment rates despite obtaining university degrees. The police recruitment drive offers a promising opportunity for educated young people to secure meaningful employment while serving their community.

The trend of university graduates joining law enforcement is not unique to Puntland. In recent years, various parts of Somalia have witnessed an increasing number of educated youth choosing careers in policing, signaling a potential shift in the perception of law enforcement as a professional career path.

By prioritizing graduates with technological skills, the Puntland Police Force hopes to modernize its operations, improve service delivery, and create a more responsive and efficient law enforcement agency.
