For the last two years the city had no functioning city council, after former President Abdirahman Farole dismissed the former council in 2011.

Since then efforts to form a new city council were hampered by clan disagreements on the distribution of the 27 seats.

The new council includes for the first time two women MP’s and the representatives of the youth.
