At least 15 people died in a road accident in the outskirts of Somali Capital, Mogadishu and left dozens injured.

The accident happened along the Mogadishu-Afgoye highway on Tuesday evening when a bus carrying passengers collided with a truck, according to witnesses and survivors of the horrific accident.

“It was a horrible scene. Bodies were strewn all over,” said one of the witnesses.

Dozens of the injured were taken to Mogadishu hospitals to receive treatment. Some of them were seriously injured.

Elsewhere one person was killed when a lorry lost its control and went into a barber shop near the Somali Presidential Palace.

Road accidents are common in Somalia, where highways lack safety features like guard rails or reflective paint.

Most of the roads are notoriously dangerous, with passenger vehicles badly maintained and often overloaded so operators can maximise profits.
