Al-shabab militant group have launched a major attack targeting Somali and Ethiopian troop’s bases, Officials and residents confirmed.
The deadly attack took place in a small village located in the Southern part of the country late Monday night, close to the Somalia and Ethiopia border but part of the Bakol region.
During the attack, at least 28 soldiers from both sides were confirmed to have been shot dead by the militants who fled from the villages hours later.
Officials of the al-Qaeda affiliated group have claimed the responsibility. The group is famous for such assaults carried on Somali and foreign troops in the country.
A government official in the Village told the media that the reason behind the high death toll was due to the ‘’unexpected’’ attack.
‘’The soldiers were taken by surprise and this is why we have such a high death toll,” said Dubad Hassan.
The officials said the attackers also suffered casualties, but they were not able to estimate how many because the militants withdrew immediately.
